SUMMARY:Margery Kempe's Journeys in Sound
DESCRIPTION:Going to play in an absolutely stunning chapel with a fascinating history in the town of Newmarket. The medievalism of its adornments is a wonder to behold and it has a lovely acoustic as well. Very much looking forward to bringing Margery Kempe here\, a place I walked through on my way to Norwich and Walsingham in 2021.

SUMMARY:Margery Kempe's Journeys in Sound
DESCRIPTION:Not far from Norwich\, this lovely little village was a welcome stop over point for me when I walked from my home in North London to Norwich and Walsingham in August 2021. \n\n\n\nCome and listen to me talk about Margery Kempe\, read from her book\, and play and sing music that was created at the time when she was gallivanting around. This year marks 650 years since she was born on the north coast of Norfolk\, in a town then known as Bishop’s Lynn. It wasn’t until after some severe mental health challenges that she led an adventurous life as a pilgrim and visionary. She was responsible for the first autobiography written in English\, telling us about her life. I will introduce this feisty woman and her incredible journeys through readings and music that comes from the places she visited: Rome\, Assisi\, the Veneto\, Lake Constance\, Jerusalem\, Santiago de Compostela\, Norway\, Gdansk (then known as Danzig)\, Stralsund\, Aachen\, Canterbury\, Walsingham and London.

SUMMARY:Chant! Singing for wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Spend an hour with me gently moving\, connecting to your breath and learning some medieval songs that nuns or pilgrims sang. No need to read music\, you just need a willingness to move and join in with your voice! You will learn a beautiful medieval round to the words “Benedicamus domino” or “Thanks be to God”.  Then the group will also sing together a simple processional pilgrim song from medieval Spain that Leah sang as she was walking the 800km from St Jean Pied de Port in the south of France near Biarritz\, along the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia\, Spain. ‘Singing in rhythm can be very motivational when your feet hurt!’ We will also sing a lullaby together and a joyful song in honour of the Virgin Mary.

DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to my concert of music that evokes Margery Kempe’s journeys across England and Europe all the way to Jerusalem\, Gdansk and Santiago de Compostela. I will be joined by local singers. \n\n\n\nThis is a church that I slept in when I went on pilgrimage to Norwich and Walsingham on foot in August 2021. SUMMARY:Sing with me! Workshop for participation in the concert on 24 June.
DESCRIPTION:In this singing workshop\, we will explore repertoire that isn’t all that well known – the medieval English carol. And like puppies\, these carols weren’t just for Christmas! This type of song was unique to our isle and was the first polyphonic sacred music to have a text in the everyday language of the people (although the English was often mixed with Latin). Carols are also absolutely intended for groups of people to join in with and sing together\, unlike most of the repertoire that still exists from the Middle Ages\, which was meant for soloists. We will also do some medieval warm ups and learn Gregorian chants from different places like Jerusalem\, Cyprus\, Poland and London. \n\n\n\nAlthough we will have lots of fun\, we will also be preparing for participants to sing along with me in my concert on 24 June. There will be another rehearsal on the day of the concert from 5-6.30pm\, concert at 7.30pm that day. It is not obligatory to take part in the concert if you want to just come to the workshop though!

SUMMARY:Margery Kempe's Journeys in Sound
DESCRIPTION:I am so delighted to perform in this beautiful and welcoming church that I visited on my pilgrimage on foot from my home in London to Norwich and then on to Walsingham. I slept in their newly appointed pilgrim accommodation the night before I arrived in Walsingham after three weeks and over 400km of walking. The church has a lovely round tower\, which I think of as rather unusual although I saw a few across Suffolk and Norfolk. Their pilgrim welcome was really amazing ! \n\n\n\nMusic from places Margery visited as far afield as Gdansk\, Santiago de Compostela\, Rome and Jerusalem along with readings from her book.

SUMMARY:Margery Kempe's Journeys in Sound
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be playing in an amazing medieval church in Withersfield as part of a quiet \, contemplative day (my favourite kind!) Withersfield is now on a newly marked up pilgrimage route from London to Walsingham\, so the theme of the day will of course be pilgrimage. You can read about that route which has been revived\, written up into a book and published by Andy Bull here. He mentions his stop in Withersfield and Rev Max Drinkwater who is hosting me there! \n\n\n\nLots of beautiful music from the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries from places Margery visited will be on offer\, as well as readings from her book.

SUMMARY:The Outspoken Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:I have been invited to give a lecture recital at the Beverley Early Music Festival about Margery Kempe in this\, her anniversary year. Weirdly\, it will be in the same venue where I played my Wool Merchant and Harp programme 10 years ago\, the marvellously quirky Beverley Guildhall. \n\n\n\nBeverley Guildhall\n\n\n\nI will chat about Margery’s journeys\, her mental health and neurodivergency\, the places she visited\, life in the fifteenth century for women\, how to be a pilgrim and what not to wear. We will sing together from medieval notation and look at images of medieval manuscripts. It’ll be enormous fun!!!

SUMMARY:Journeys in sound with Margery Kempe - first autobiography writer\, pilgrim and visionary
DESCRIPTION:Margery Kempe\, born in 1373\, was from King’s Lynn (then known as Bishop’s Lynn) in Norfolk. Daughter of an important merchant\, five-time mayor of Lynn and Alderman of the prestigious Guild of the Holy Trinity\, John Brunham\, her book is the first autobiography in English\, probably written by a scribe on her behalf (although it’s possible she was literate and just felt she had to hide it). The story she tells of her life is extraordinary\, both strange and familiar to us today. She was an enthusiastic pilgrim\, visiting Rome\, Jerusalem\, Santiago de Compostela and the relics of the Holy Blood in Bad Wilsnack in northern Germany as well as pilgrimage places in England like Canterbury\, Norwich\, Leicester\, Melton Mowbray\, York\, Beverley\, Lincoln\, London and Ely. She even brushed with Norway by accident when the boat taking her to Germany was swept off course. In my concert\, I evoke some of her journeys and meetings with music from the places she visited. There will be Gregorian chants from Cyprus and from Jerusalem\, pilgrim songs\, music from the Old Hall manuscript\, medieval English carols in honour of saints alongside sacred music from places Kempe visited in Germany\, Spain and Italy.
