Margery Kempe’s Journeys in Sound
Journey with me to places Margery Kempe visited on her pilgrimages. I will perform music she might have experienced in those far flung places and read from her book, the first autobiography in English.

I take my concert exploring the sounds Margery Kempe might have heard and been familiar with to the town where the Mayor arrested her and accused her of wanting to steal wives away from husbands.
I have been invited to give a lecture recital at the Beverley Early Music Festival about Margery Kempe in this, her anniversary year. Weirdly, it will be in the same venue where I played my Wool Merchant and Harp programme 10 years ago, the marvellously quirky Beverley Guildhall. I will chat about Margery’s journeys, her […]
I’ll be playing in an amazing medieval church in Withersfield as part of a quiet , contemplative day (my favourite kind!) Withersfield is now on a newly marked up pilgrimage route from London to Walsingham, so the theme of the day will of course be pilgrimage. You can read about that route which has been […]
I am so delighted to perform in this beautiful and welcoming church that I visited on my pilgrimage on foot from my home in London to Norwich and then on to Walsingham. I slept in their newly appointed pilgrim accommodation the night before I arrived in Walsingham after three weeks and over 400km of walking. […]
In this singing workshop, we will explore repertoire that isn’t all that well known – the medieval English carol. And like puppies, these carols weren’t just for Christmas! This type of song was unique to our isle and was the first polyphonic sacred music to have a text in the everyday language of the people […]
Come and listen to my concert of music that evokes Margery Kempe’s journeys across England and Europe all the way to Jerusalem, Gdansk and Santiago de Compostela. I will be joined by local singers. This is a church that I slept in when I went on pilgrimage to Norwich and Walsingham on foot in August […]
Excited to have been invited to play in this amazing and atmospheric medieval church, now looked after by Friends of Friendless Churches: In 2023 we celebrate 650 years since Margery Kempe was born in a town on the north coast of Norfolk, then known as Bishop’s Lynn. After some severe mental health challenges and an […]
Spend an hour with me gently moving, connecting to your breath and learning some medieval songs that nuns or pilgrims sang. No need to read music, you just need a willingness to move and join in with your voice! You will learn a beautiful medieval round to the words “Benedicamus domino” or “Thanks be to God”. […]
Not far from Norwich, this lovely little village was a welcome stop over point for me when I walked from my home in North London to Norwich and Walsingham in August 2021. Come and listen to me talk about Margery Kempe, read from her book, and play and sing music that was created at the […]
Playing in this fourteenth-century Suffolk church will be a pleasure. One of my final Margery Kempe concerts in this, her anniversary year, so catch it while you can! There will be refreshments after the concert.
Going to play in an absolutely stunning chapel with a fascinating history in the town of Newmarket. The medievalism of its adornments is a wonder to behold and it has a lovely acoustic as well. Very much looking forward to bringing Margery Kempe here, a place I walked through on my way to Norwich and […]
